For as long as I can remember, my mom has NEVER left home without her red lipstick.
One of my earliest and fondest memories is joining my mom and her best friend on their weekly dates to Marie Calendar for pie, coffee, and some much-needed girl time. After every meal, my mom would reapply her red lipstick and of course, I wanted some too!
What five-year-old girl doesn't want some of her mom's lipstick?.. right?!?
So she would tap a little bit of her red lipstick on my cheeks and blend it out, for a rosy glow.
Then she'd tap some on my lower lip and have me blot my lips.
THAT is my first memory of makeup!
By the 7th grade, I was getting my makeup confiscated by my teacher.
That should have been an indicator of my future destiny with cosmetics.
Then I saw him on TV, my first celebrity makeup artist idol... Kevyn Aucoin appeared on the Oprah show.
He transformed Lisa Marie Presley into Marily Monroe, Drew Barrymore into a 20's Old Hollywood cinema star!
He was a believer in timeless classic beauty.
I was obsessed, so I bought his book "Making Faces" and followed the steps of a different look each night, then wash it off before bed.
His three books are still a part of my collection almost 25 years later.
My career began after "auditioning" to become the Counter Manager for Smashbox Cosmetics in the late 1990s. I was trained by the company's Senior Artists whose work was primarily doing makeup on celebrity photo shoots, television, and film. Working for a Studio Line was great exposure to makeup techniques, but I wanted to learn more about skincare. So I sought to work for a cosmetic line that offered not only makeup but skincare and fragrance.
I started freelancing and working on weddings, photoshoots and some TV work almost immediately. I had the pleasure of doing makeup for the Diva herself, DJ Irene, for a show inwhich she interviewed DJ's who were performing in the Los Angeles house music scene.
In 2001 I was hired to create Custom Blend Makeup.
Formulating exact match foundation, powder, and concealer (from scratch) at Nordstrom. Becoming a Custom Blend Artist and Business Manager for Prescriptives Cosmetics, was one of the best choices I could have made for my career. I learned color theory and the art of matching makeup for every skin tone under the sun. Through Nordstrom, I also became Skin Care Certified in 2002 and an FNL graduate (Future Nordstrom Leader) in 2006.
In 2006 I was promoted to Assistant Department Manager of Cosmetics and Fragrance at the Westside Store before leaving the company in 2009. Working retail allowed me to work on women of all ages, skin tones, and skin types.
In 2010 I landed on San Juan Island, for what was intended to be a
6-week visit that changed the course of my life. After a few weeks,
I became intrigued about what life would be like here and decided to fly back to LA to get my belongings. I didn’t have a job when I came back two weeks later, but after a couple of applications, I was hired at Roche Harbor Resort's Afterglow Spa. I proudly worked my way from Seasonal Receptionist to Lead Makeup Artist almost instantly. I loved working at the spa. There I had the privilege of working with hundreds of resort brides over my 10-year spa career. Becoming Spa Manager in 2015. I am blessed to have been part of the team that built the rich history of Roche Harbor Weddings from 2010-2019 and now as an independent vendor in 2020.
